Designing with Feeling

Why Atmosphere Matters as Much as Function
When we think about good design, we often focus on function.

Does the layout work? Is the lighting right? Are the materials durable? Is the space practical to navigate?

These questions matter.

But they don’t tell the whole story.

The most memorable environments are not only functional. They make people feel something.

A hotel can feel calming before you even reach your room. A healthcare environment can reduce stress simply by feeling warm and welcoming. A workplace can encourage focus and creativity through an atmosphere that supports rather than distracts.

Atmosphere isn’t created by a single design choice.

It is the result of many elements working together.

Natural light, textures, materials, colour palettes and artwork all work together to shape the identity and atmosphere of a space. Remove one element and the experience changes.

Art has a particularly unique role because it speaks without words.

It can introduce softness into minimalist interiors, create moments of reflection or reinforce the identity of a space in a quiet and meaningful way.

When I create artwork, I think about more than the piece itself.

I consider how it will live within an environment, how it interacts with architecture, materials and natural light, and how it can contribute to an atmosphere that feels balanced, welcoming and lasting.

Because good design isn’t only about how a space works.

It’s also about how it makes people feel.

At Making Sense Art, I create contemporary Scandinavian art designed to become a natural part of the spaces where people live, work, heal and recharge. Because I believe every environment deserves to feel as good as it looks. If you’re planning a hospitality, healthcare or workplace project, I’d love to hear about your vision.
