Why Art Should Never Be an Afterthought in Interior Design

Interior design is often described as the balance between function and aesthetics. Layouts are planned, materials selected and lighting carefully considered. Yet one important element is often left until the very end: the artwork.

In many projects, art becomes the final purchase. A wall is left empty, and only then does the search begin for something that fits the available space.

While there is nothing wrong with adding art later, the result is often very different from interiors where artwork has been considered from the beginning.

When art is included early in the design process, it becomes part of the overall concept rather than simply decoration. Colour palettes, scale, materials and architectural details can work together to create a more cohesive and memorable environment.

This approach is particularly valuable in hospitality, healthcare and workplace environments, where atmosphere plays an important role in how people experience a space.

A carefully chosen artwork can strengthen a hotel’s identity, soften a healthcare environment or create moments of calm within a busy workplace.

When I develop artwork for interiors, I think beyond the individual piece. I consider how it will interact with light, materials, proportions and the purpose of the space. My aim is always to create work that feels naturally connected to its surroundings.

At Making Sense Art, I create contemporary Scandinavian art designed to become a natural part of the spaces where people live, work, heal and recharge. Because I believe every environment deserves to feel as good as it looks. If you’re planning a hospitality, healthcare or workplace project, I’d love to hear about your vision.
